Forged in Fury: A True Story of Courage, Horror...and Revenge
Published in Paperback by London Bridge Trade (April, 1997)
Author: Michael Elkins
Average review score:

Terrific
A comprehensive chronology of Jewish resistence to the Nazis and their collaborators from the late 30's through the war. It also details complicity of the Central and Eastern Europeans with the Nazis, the apathy of the "Allies" during the war, and the shameful behavior of the world after the war with respect to refugees, Nazi criminals and Israel. This book will make you proud if your Jewish and angry if your human (Jewish or otherwise).

I couldn't stop reading
Though horrible and shocking, this book shows how the human spirit cannot be surpressed. In spite of an absolute impossibility of success, a small handfull of men kept the spirit of survival and revenge alive during the darkest period in history. While revenge may seem inappropriate in our concept of ideal society, at that time, no other emotion is conceivable! This book very clearly shows how revenge was a natural outgrowth of the horrors of the holocost.

Very accurate
Elkins keeps his work to the point. He does not hide the facts, but tells them as they really were. For a real close look at the holocaust, this book is a perfect read

Beyond Religion: A Personal Program for Building a Spiritual Life Outside the Walls of Traditional Religion

Beyond Religion and Into My Soul
This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is like I wrote it myself it is so near to my own philosophy. If you would to explore something outside what you have always been told is the truth, read this book!

This book will open your eyes, as it did mine!
As a spiritual teacher I have often been asked about spirituality and religion. David, however, deals with this topic better than anyone I have ever seen--Del Millers, author, Dancing with God

Insightful
This book expressed ideas that I have been feeling for a long time. This book was beautiful and spiritually insightful. I do believe in God and our lord and savior Jesus Christ, however traditional religion did not quench my hunger for spiritual knowledge. I strongly advise this book for the spiritual seeker

LullaBible - I love it!
This book and the cd's that are included allow you some of the most relaxing time. You can put the cd on at night with the volumn down low, and just drift off to sleep in God's presence. This item is for Mother and Baby and both will enjoy it for many years to come. I buy it for baby shower gifts and the recipient has always been very pleased.

I'll probably be listening to this when I am old and grey. Oh yeah, they say once and adult, twice a child - oh well - it's good easy listening - enjoy yours.

A Wonderful Gift for Mom & Baby
This is a beautiful book and CD combo. The book is beautifully put together, and the songs are just as beautiful. The book contains sheet music, so you could even play it on the piano or another musical instrument if you wanted to. The songs are made from stories in the Bible, starting at Genesis and ending in Revelation. A great gift created especially for mothers and babies. Stephen Elkins also put together the "Word & Song Bible", which is just as great. Check out that one too!

Icy Clutches

Author: Aaron J. Elkins

The best of "Gideon Oliver"
As soon as I stumbled on my first book by Aaron Elkins, I raced through all of his others. I love the type of mysteries surrounding a character like his Gideon Oliver; an academic and forensic anthropologist rather than a cop. All of the G.O. mysteries are set in interesting places, and all have a good dose of physical anthropology. This particular one is set near a glacier (which holds the mystery) in Alaska. And in terms of suspense, setting, and how the science was used to "crack the case", I think "Icy Clutches" is the best of the series. MUCH better than the somewhat dragging "Old Bones", the one which won an Edgar Award. If you like the mystery genre and want some reading that is quick yet satisfying, I recommend all the Gideon Oliver books; but especially "Icy Clutches".

My first-and not last-Elkins
This is an excellent detective story from the glacial field of Alaska. Gideon Oliver is, for me, a new find and going to be an addition to my reading lists. Starting with Oliver's Sherlockian deductions based on a few skeletal remains to his final deductions and resolution of the case, there is excellent detective work. And my original prime suspect gets killed during the course of the story. Every mystery reader knows that feeling. I'll be backtracking to the earlier books in the series and bringing myself up to date real quick.

Best of the Gideon Oliver Series
For those who have read the more recent additions to the Gideon Oliver series by Aaron Elkins, I highly recommend they go back to this title and read it. Or even reread it! It is the best of the series and a synthesis of all that works for Mr. Elkins. The story is set in Alaska, a glacial country of brooding cold skies and even colder ice. The plot is perfect, combining just the right amounts of human foibles and motive, geological factoids, and of course, forensic anthropology. And there is an air of menace which pervades the book like no other in the series.

Stress Management for Dummies

Stress Management For Dummies
You don't have to be a dummy in order to manage the stress in you life. There are a lot of things in life that can stress you out. This is an excellent book on stress management. It describes the causes of stress and various things that you can do to prevent or reduce the amount of stress, like breathing exercises. Did you know that a messy house can stress you out?
How about rush hour? The cartoons also help to de-stress you! How can you be stressed out when you are laughing?

FABULOUS BOOK!
I read this book over 5 times, and it just amazes me how this book is so clear about clearing up stress in my life. There is a wonderful sense of humor in this book. The author, Alan Elkin, must be a funny guy. I hope that he will write many more books. If you have any stress in your life, or if you even just want to laugh hysterically over and over again, please read this book!

Great information and ideas about Stress Management
This book is FILLED with information presented in a fun and completely intelligible format! Although I've read numerous articles and books on stress, I've never found one as practical and clearly defined as this book. There are mini-questionnaires throughout the chapters that are quick and fun to take, and very worthwhile. In addition Dr. Elkin cites and summarizes the most recent studies and literature. He has a talent for explaining complicated concepts in a way that reaches the reader. I was previously familiar with some of the literature that was mentioned in the book, such as Jon Kabat-Zinn's book, but Dr. Elkin's explanations crystallized the concepts for me.

I particularly enjoyed the section about worrying! Dr. Elkin's words explained it, made me laugh about it, and then gave me wonderful suggestions for dealing with it. A book like this can actually change your life!

Teach Me About God: Includes Special Tips to Help Parents Explain Big Truths to Small Children

We must have this book back!
This is a perfectly written book for little ones, giving them an understanding of Salvation, Prayer, The Bible, The Holy Spirit, Baptistm, & The Lord's Supper, with helpful hints for parents at the end of each chapter. My daughter made a decision to accept Christ as her Savior (with a complete understanding of her decision) as a result of this book and so did our pastor's daughter, both at the age of 4. I'm now looking to pass this on to others and am terribly upset at not being able to find it!

The perfect book for little children!
This book is so well written! The simple pictures captivate my 2 1/2 year old, and he loves me to read this story to him, over and over again. I'm sure this will be one of his favorite books for many years. It really has helped me to explain difficult concepts to him. I would highly recommend this book for every Christian mother who is concerned about the salvation of her child! I am saddened that I can no longer find this book anywhere.

I've been urging Multnomah for 15 months to re-issue.
A simple, clear presentatation of Biblical doctrine that even adults can comprehend! No cartoon characters, but attractive quality life-like illustrations of Bible characters and contemporary children and adults. My grandchildren love to hear it and/or read it themselves again and again. It's one of my favorite gifts to give to kids and at baby showers. Please join me in urging Multnomah to re-issue it! If anyone knows of stock available please e-mail me.

Tears and Gratitude
My daughter bought this book to thank her Dad and me for everything we have ever done for her. I read it and cried, as we had just lost our son to a battle with brain cancer, and this book reminded me of him as he touched so many lives esp. in how he accepted his illness and in his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. But it also reminded us of our other three children, as they, too, have touched many lives in their own way ----so we bought each of them this book to thank them for what they are. This book is for all the people who quietly do the kind things in life that few people know about, yet who influence people just by the goodness that shines through them. It is a heart warming reminder to all of us that everything we do does matter.

Touching...
This song is so beautiful! It touches your heart and soul with so much Love and appreciation...I dedicate this song to my girlfriend Michele who led me to the Lord. It is a song that will bring tears to your eyes whenever you hear it, if you have Jesus in your heart and know He is the only way to Heaven! :)Like the song says...Thank you for giving to the Lord...Mine is the life that was changed! :) May you all experience God's life changing power. Amen!

Straight from the Heart
I bought this for my son's birthday as I remember the day he had done a play at our church with this song. Their was not a dry eye when everyone listen to this song. It made me think he was thanking everyone around him as well as myself for his life was changed. An upbeat song teenagers will love as well as anyone else!

Chicken Soup for the Jewish Soul: Stories to Open the Heart and Rekindle the Soul (Chicken Soup for the Soul (Cloth))

My new favorite
Wonderful stories, not only feel good stories, but some actual miracles! I cried, I smiled. I read this book one or two at a time at bedtime. The short stories would be nice to read at the table on Shabbat. I agree with another reviewer, you don't have to be Jewish to enjoy this book!

When you finish, you will read it again.
I laughed, I cried, I remembered. This is a great book, even if you are not Jewish. It contains a wonderful story about the present Pope. There is something for everyone.
Now, I am waiting for Chicken Soup For the Jewish Soul #2 and hopefully, #3.

At last -- the Jewish volume in this great series
So nu, it's about time we finally got "Chicken Soup for the JEWISH Soul" -- after all, didn't we Jews invent the chicken-soup-cure-all metaphor in the first place? And storytelling is such a big part of our culture, that there was no shortage of material. In fact, according to the intro to this book, one of the reason it took so long to edit is because there was SO MUCH material. Enough, I hope, to do a sequel or two.

I was delighted to find so many of my favorite contemporary stories included: Larry Trapp, the ex-KKK member who had a real change of heart; a prison inmate touched by a hug from the late Shlomo Carlebach; How Kirk Douglas re-connected with his Jewishness at the Western Wall; how Eddie Kantor started the March of Dimes; the heroism of Raoul Wallenberg; the good-hearted people of Billings, Montana, who took a stand against antisemitism, etc. Plus there are many, many new stories to touch the heart and soul. Ten stars!

The Object Stares Back: On the Nature of Seeing
Published in Paperback by Harvest Books (August, 1997)
Author: James Elkins
Average review score:

well-done, interesting, but needs a warning...
The main reason I posted this review is to warn readers that some of the images in this book may be disturbing. I thought it was well-written and fascinating. However, if I had known what I was going to encounter, I never would have opened it. The sexual images are tasteful and not overly graphic, but I was bothered by the death and torture photos. There are some things I just don't want to see if I can avoid them.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with this kind of thing being published. I would not have it "banned" or interfere with its distribuition. I just wish that someone had told me it's not for the squeamish.

If these kinds of things don't bother you, then it's worth the read.

Insight on the nature of sight
Elkins' thoughts on sight and seeing is a multifaceted deconstruction on how we view and are viewed by objects we encounter. It's a subject that we take for granted and draw large assumptions about. Elkins proposes seeing as a metaphor for the life cycle: we awake groggy-eyed like a newborn, go through our day with vigor and energy observing and absorbing, and return to darkness in sleep like blindness and death.

Tied together with many personal anecdotes with flowing use of language, the book is an insight for those interested in post-structuralist analysis of idea, communication, and sight.

On the Nature of Seeing...
I remember reading SOMEWHERE-- a textbook on psychology, perhaps??-- that humans absorb about 70% of their world through their eyes. After reading this work, I am convinced it is paradoxically that the real percentage is BOTH less *AND* more than this figure.

LESS because we are so often "blind" or unaware of what we see and the very NATURE of what we see and how we see at all. MORE, because so much rests on our ability to see AT ALL, especially in the late 20th century, and especially in our culture, which places such high value on sight (though, perhaps, less value on HOW we see or WHAT is seen). But, again, LESS, because we really don't THINK about what we see or *how* we see...

Mr. Elkins, an art historian-- someone TRAINED to see, if you will-- has done much thinking on the topic and theory of sight and what it REALLY means to see. I admit, when I first got this book, I was afraid it would be the sort of dry, academic drivel that one would need to plow through with a dictionary at one's side, coming to the end almost gasping for breath, "there!! I finished it!!"

Not so at all. Mr. Elkins has written an extremely entertaining, thought provoking book on something we all do every day, often for every SECOND of the day (and isn't dreaming a form of seeing, after all, in it's own fashion??), and done it without heavy emphasis on academia, abstract or unknown concepts, or the general feeling-- that I have had in other arenas-- that he clearly wishes us to believe that he is SMARTER than the average reader, and needs to prove it through the use of highly technical jargon or impenetrable metaphor.

Again, I say, "not at all." This is a very engaging, thought provoking work that I would heartily recommend to anyone even REMOTELY interested in the ideas behind sight and what is (and is NOT) seen. We do it all the time, every day, from birth to death, in most cases. The least we can do is to listen to a fine thinker like Mr. Elkins and hear HIS thoughts on this complicated, fascinating subject.

The Ra Material: An Ancient Astronaut Speaks (The Law of One , No 1)

THE TRUTH OUT THERE BEFORE IT BECAME HIP
The history of psychic channelling and channelled material has a long and checkered past. In the last century, at least in the West, the seriousness and quality of such work has been generally dismissed as something between a quaint parlor trick and delusional doomsday prophesying. In a broader historical context, however, channeling has been accepted for 1000's of years as a genuine means of acquiring valid and useful information. Consider that much of the Bible, as the divinely inspired Word of God, easily qualifies as channelled material. It is from this latter context that I view the RA Material. From an intuitive standpoint the information contained within this first book, as well as, the remaining four other books rings true. The channelled entity RA claims to be a higher dimensional being of collective intelligence with karmic connections to Earth and it's ensouled inhabitants. Essentially, the message is as follows: Long ago, Earth was selected by benevolent higher dimensional beings as a planet for the seeding of Life in all its myriad forms including humankind. These beings are members of an "intergalactic federation" of sorts comprised of various advanced intelligences with representatives from assorted civilizations throughout the universe. There "mission" is to oversee and nurture the development and evolution of other less advanced civilizations while not interfering with planetary affairs or indvidual lives to the point of violating Free Will. One realizes that at some point, the distictions between angels and highly developed extra-dimensional alien beings who watch over us with concern and care are rougly one and the same. Throughout history, they have periodically attempted to gently steer us away from the darkness of possible destruction and towards the light of soul development or evolution by offering wisdom and understanding through various means ranging from inspiration in dreams to direct physical contact. Their message is The Law Of One which states that the Creator is real, that the universe and everything in it is His creation, and that Love is not only also real but a powerful energetic force of Creation. We are all souls having a "human experience" over many physical incarnations for the purpose of learning truths which will allow us to move on to the next level of development in an endless jouney to become one with the Creator again. This is but a brief synopsis and doesn't do justice to the remarkable amount of information and specific detail contained in the five books. The books were written in the early 1980's, and the fact that a great many of RA's statements have come to pass in the last twenty years lends credence to the overall quality of the work and channelling in general. In my experience, this material is the best of it's kind, easily ranking with the Jane Roberts' Seth books. Read the RA Material and enjoy the feeling of wonder again and again.

Profound
The Ra material is the transcription of the taped communications between researcher Don and the entity RA, a being that is talking through Carla, often referred to as the "instrument" throughout the book (s), in a state of deep trance. The transcriptions are carried out by Jim and the three are always present during all sessions, creating a triangulation of light that allows for RA, a sixth dimensional being, that calles itself a "socialmemory complex", to come through and speak.

RA has choosen this group because of the purity of their intent and makes himself available to them for questions about the Universe, the Creator, the dimensions, Karma, the law of One and any other material that might aid people in understanding universal truths that might be helpful for mankinds evolution.

The materail is very esoteric and requires some concentration. However, it is well worth the effort, as it is enlightening, very precise, accurate and informative. The explanations around the shift in dimensions we are about to undergo on the planet, that Ra defines as the harvest, are devoid of hype and sensation. Harvest is a process that all beings and planetary bodies eventually encur, following physical/spiritual law just as eclipses do or the seasons. The science of the harvest ( ascension) is explained in depth here as is the chakra system and it's role in Soul evolution.

Also extremely interesting the explanation of the polarization of entities into Service to Self orintated entities and Service to Others orientated entities and the implications these have in the ascension process and the roles they play within the bigger picture.

A really deep read and well worth the effort. I have read all four volumes and I am about to tackle vol 5. I thoroughly recommend it.

The Ra Material & Law of One books
This "contact" is the only example of so-called channeled material to which I would give an unqualified endorsement -- if by "channeled" one refers to communication with another entity, not one's own subconscious or superconscious, nor "angelic" or hierarchical sources, while in trance.

Guaranteed to interest students of forteana, metaphysics, and matters of the spirit... But, to those of you on the straight and narrow spiritual path, a cautionary note is advised whenever the possibility arises of engaging in "spiritual gossip" that may accompany the "true teachings". And said Goethe: "Thought widens, but paralyzes; whereas action enlivens, but narrows."

Hope I haven't confused you too much with this electronic "contact". Happy distorting.
